I am going elk hunting in the mountains. I have a f250 ext cab, short bed with a posi in the back and locker in the front.
I just bought a jeep wrangler and it has open front and rears.
which one will be better offroad in the mountains?? everyone here says the jeep will be with opens over the truck with all 4 spinning.

ARE YOU KIDDING??? Of course the Jeep will walk all over the F-250.
Do some research and find the test between the Wrangler TJ and the H1 Hummer. The Wrangle almost beat the Hummer. Jeeps are the way to go! I've had seven and just sold my CJ-5. You will LOVE your Jeep!

Jeeps (all years and models) are very easy to mod. You should be able to get lockers for it. I recommend a Detroit Locker in the rear and an air locker up front. No way will a big truck out climb any Jeep. With a full tank of gas, the Jeep should be almost perfectly balanced as far as weight distro. The truck will just have all its weight up front and too long of a wheel base. I had a big F250 and a CJ7 for years and at one time a CJ2B (Willys). The new Jeeps have the same "feel" as an old CJ, but they had transmission problems with them. I do not recommend anything more than a 4" suspension lift either.

ive done a LOT a 4 wheeling, id go with the truck and all four wheels moving the vehicle instead of 2 dragging 2. if you're gonna be climbing mountains and doing tight trail work the jeep be easier to negotiate the tight stuff but whe it gets muddy and sloppy, nothing beats posi traction.

Location, location, location.
Much will depend on the terrain you will be in as much as anything. I used to live in northern Colorado near Wyoming. Out there my full size Ford did just as well as my old CJ since the terrain is more wide open and the longer wheelbase of the truck was not much of a problem. Here in east Tennessee the oposite would be true. Even a Jeep with open diffs will do better since the trails are much tighter. If you don't care about body damage then it is a toss up.

you really only have 3 in the ford- few posi's are worthy when you need them (though the AAM/gleason design seems to work) The ford weighs almost twice what the jeep weighs- throws a lot of 3 wheel drive advantage away right there. If I were doing open hardpack fireroad I'd take the Ford, otherwise the Jeep will deliver better- having open diffs is not the end of the world- as long as you know the limitations and drive for them- mostly rolling through stuff that will cross you up.

Another thing to think about is how much gear are you planning on taking? If you close the deal and get an elk what are you going to do with it? A couple of coolers with A LOT of weight. If you are taking any camping gear, this rules the jeep out in a hurry. Dressing an elk is an all day project, have fun.
