Question Will a 1/2 Ton Chain Fall.....

Pulling the engine to install a new ring gear on the fly wheel.

I found a heavy I-beam A-frame, but has a 1/2 ton chain fall hanging from it a guy is going to let me use for free.

Will a 1/2 ton pick up a 502mpi with a whipple on it or should I go ahead and rent a 1 ton chain fall?

I would appreciate some input on it. I'm only lifting the engine high enough to pivot the engine 90 degrees in the engine compartment to swing it around to get to the bell housing. I removed the starboard exhaust riser so I could swing it around. The port was left on due to the oiling system and computer box.

Thanks,
Shawn

1/2 ton, 1000 pounds....shouldn't be a problem. (Remember, a 1/2 ton chain fall won't fail at 1/2 ton, but much higher......if it did, whoever made it would be in some trouble.)

From Merc literature a 502MAG with a bravo drive weighs 1189 pounds.

Regardless, exceeding a mfg's load ratings is rarely advisable.

Chains, etc are rated to a load they can take infinite number of times. Their break point is usually a multiple (2,4,etc) higher than rated.

At my old job we proofed all lifting devices w/ 2x rated load.

I normally figure most things have a 100% safety factor built in. That being said, a one ton chain hoist doesn't cost very much.

Hey bro!!

Your more than welcome to come down to the river bottom and use the A-Frame - it's got a 3 or 4 ton chain fall on it.

It's also high enough to bungee jump off of if we get bored!!

BTW - Got a couple of BMAX HT's on the way for the Whipple boat - we'll see how they handle things. Now we're planning on removing the pipes and getting rid if the mufflers (had to have them in Ca.)

Give me a call!!

Take care
