My port engine is goes " click,..click click click " but fails to get the solenoid activated, sounds like a flat battery, changed batteries L to R
tried boosting can't get it started, don't know where to find the starter, or wether I can actually reach it without removing engine.
any ideas for a quick fix???
regards

Something is loose check the cables on the starter and if that is not the case you may have a bad starter. it is possible to engage the starter if your battery is low and sometimes it won't spring back. Tape it with a hammer and try again. And the starter is on the sb side in the back port engine gonna be tight to get to.

Volt meter reads 12 volt drops down when trying to start.
how far down is the starter, if it's at the bottom I cant get to it, will have to pull the motor.
any online schematics of a 496 HO

Since you checked the battery, I'd check the power cable connection on your starter and also the ground cable from the engine to the battery. There might be some corrosion in between the starter and the cable or a loose connection. Jump the solenoid on your starter with the power cable (direct) using a 12 gauge wire just to make sure that the problem ain't your starter. If it still doesn't crank over, change your starter.

Where is it clicking? On the starter or does it have one of those circuit breakers on the engine. I have had to replace a lot of those circuit breakers. The starter on my waterski boat is 12 years old still going strong but the breaker has been replaced twice.

the solenoid is making the clicking noise when you turn the key, the started isn't turning becuase the brushes are not touching the armatuer of the starter
