Default 280 or 380 k plane

What is the difference between the merc 280 and 380 tabs besides one obviously being longer? What are the dimensions? What size, type, etc. of boat is each tab designed for? Thanks

great thread, it looks as though you were able to just remove the lower plate and add the new 380s. Did it require any other modification, or does the upper plate, hydraulic, etc just hook up the same and go? thanks

I installed the 380's on the Bullet over the summer & it worked out beter than expected. You use ALOT less tab than the 280's. Everything will interchange with no problem with the exception of your indicator mount. The old style is a clip on type, the newer is bolted. Not sure which one you have but is not a big deal to convert. Marc at Bam has them in stock. A major problem in switching these over is the pins corrode making it next to impossible getting them out. If you need I have a NIB starboard side transom mount.
Are your thru pins bolted or retained by C-clips ?

direct bolt up,very easy, I have heard if the pin is corroded its a beoch. but you have to ck outdrive/prop clearance, you see I had to cut mine

Haven't seen you post lately, did you ever finish your motors? Did they make 900 hp as planned? Are you still going to try to run bravos? Smitty

If you have an 8' beam, the 380 plates will need to be cut on a side by side application w/o extension boxes. With extension boxes, the 380's will likely be a bolt on application.
I found that even with the plates level with the bottom, the 380's give you a increased level of stability/control vs. the 280's.

I am not sure whether it has pins of c-clips yet, but will check. The boat is a triple bravo setup so I am sure it would need the tabs to be modfied to not hit the outdrives.
Artic: We finished the motors and they made the numbers planned. We decided to run 7lb of boost instead of the originally planned 8, so they are only putting out 850 now. We sold the old bravos, and upgrades the new transom assemblies, as well as ordered three new billet marine xr's with satin 2inch shorties. We also think the lower boost will help the drives last longer. The few hours we had testing the boat with the 640s, we found that it needed a lot of tab to keep the bow down, so we hope the 2in shorties will fix that, but also are checking out what is involved to go from the 280s to 380s. If the boat still needs a lot of tab, we want everything for the switch planned out to keep us on the water the most this season
