Thinking ahead to the finish work on my transom project. I'm using the west sytems epoxy. I've been told that polyester over epoxy is a no-no. What can I use in place of the Gelcoat. Is there a vinylester product? This boat lives in the water 4-5 months so I can't use paint.
I have tried everything in the paint family accept awlgrip. Nothing stays on a boat it all eventually blisters below the waterline.

Durratechs product called Durraprime. Make sure that you wash off the Epoxy Anneal (sp?) before you prime. Use a scotch bright pad and soapy water seems to work well.

So if I use the Duratech product as a primer this will be the barrier coat between whatever else I want to use? Can I still use Gelcoat?

yes it is and you can use gel coat over it. make sure you have complete coverage with the primer. one side note though this product works over "most" epoxies not all. i have had trouble with it on occasion and there really isn't way to tell without buying a gallon and doing a test area. and a Jon said wash off the amine blush with water and dry thoroughly

I am also doing some work on the bottom of my 382 with west system epoxy. I called their tech line because I had the same question about gel coat. They said to put two coats of pure epoxy over the epoxy with the faring filler, once fully cured clean off the amine blush with warm water and scotch brite, sand with 80 grit and it is ready for gel coat.
The tech person was very confident that west system epoxy provides a good base for gel, I hope he is right.
