Does anyone have any good ideas for cleaning exhaust stains off the gelcoat in your engine compartment?

Just me, or does anyone else wonder how you get exhaust stains IN the engine compartment? Is there a good story here?

I would think it's from the breather hoses comming off the valve covers. Under a closed engine hatch, the air is probably filled with the crankcase pressure fumes, and after time it builds up on everything if not cleaned regularly....(especially noticable white gelcoat).

I usually cover the distributer, carb, and unload a whole bottle of simple green throughout the bilge, then carefully hose down.

If I recall correctly, they've had some trouble with the header bolts loosening.

Anyways, I've had good luck with simple green. You have to put it on kinda heavy and let it soak, but it does a pretty good job. Soft scrub with bleach and alot of water does the trick to the vinyl.
