Totally agree.
A part of my previous boat was painted by an auto paint shop using standard auto paint, and I can tell you it is not suited for boats. It can not handle the mechanical wear from fenders, lines etc.
But I have a friend with an old Formula with factory Imron paint, and it is still like new. The Imron paint seems to be very strong.

I have an old hunting buddy of mine who painted his truck black imron years, and years ago. We've run it through the thickets and stuff that usually leave what I call "Georgia Pinstriping" all down the sides, and his still shines like new..........other than the spot he accidently shot his truck through the woods with 000 Buckshot.

i painted one boat with imron and was sorry for doing it,and as far as durability this is true, as i painted airplanes with it and it held up well, but that was 20 year old technology, its too expensive, your limited to colors as it not mixable/matchable, if it chips it will peel in sections, the fumes are toxic, the additives and flex agents are a real pain, it likes to fisheye, do we need more? i think a better boat paint is awlgrip or epoxy type paints that flex,

German paints are typically the best.
