Default The sad end of ..."The Cigarette"

I am sorry to report that we have found the final resting place of the 32 foot Cary that Don Aronow raced as "The Cigarette".

He sold it to two brothers from Australia, the Carr brothers, and they were killed while racing it. Arnold Glass then bought it and raced it in Australia. He sold it and it sat around until the mid 80's, it was in pretty bad disrepair by that time.

Someone patched it up enough to make a 36 foot plug out of it and pulled a mold off it.

Once the mold was finished..THE CIGARETTE WAS DESTROYED.
A very big thank you to two HORBA members in Australia who have been tracking this down for the last several months for us. We passed along every bit of info we had and they worked like detectives following every lead, until they spoke to the man that made the mold from it.

We hoped we could find it and bring it back and restore it.

We still have hope for the other 32 foot Cary that Vincenzo Balestrieri bought and raced as Black Tornado. Is that still around somewhere in Europe?

thats sucks, Im sure the OSO brothers would have pitched in to get the hull back here for a restore. I cannot beleive they didnt stick it on ebay or something because of its history.

Didn't the the Cary hull become the Coyote then the PowerPlay hull eventually?

Sorry about the news...what a shame.

I thought there were several identical "The Cigarette" 32 Cary's. Where did the others go?

what was ebay in the 80īs, I presume the event took place around that time.
In the 80īs who cared about some old boat as Aronow was alive in the mid 80īs and you could buy new boats from him?
He wasnīt that big a deal globally and only known for being the Creator of the Cigarette boat company.

Wouldīve thought that Don himself wouldīve kept track of his first Cig as did Nautor with their first Swan and bought it back using it as a promo boat.

Besides remember what was the Hot tickets in Offshore Racing in the 80īs... Big Cats , Surface Drives (until banned by some organisations..mainly US),and Italian engines (Lamborghini and Seatek).
