Engine Freight

Just priced sending one from VA to Louisiana. We have contracts with carriers so I expect I'm getting a better deal than the average "Joe". Class 85 on an LTL carrier packed on a skid with plywood sides/top. (although more expensive, Insurance covers the value under class 85) Quoted $500.00 each way.

I just had my engine shipped from CA to IL. Will arrive Tuesday. I called everyone for quotes. I felt most confident with Forward Air. They were not the lowest price or the highest price. They have hubs at all major airports. The unfortunate thing is that they require cashiers check or money order
So the builder had to take it to the terminal, get a quote and then get the funds. They told me they have had too many people receive their shipment and then dispute it for no reason.
The cost to ship my motor at 1100# was $ 492.00. Now hopefully it shows up and in one piece!

If something is a good deal you can't just wait. When I found my current 382 I bought it 3 hours after it was listed on OSO and hadn't even considered selling the current 312 at the time. (ended up with 2 boats for 2 months and although the 312 was in great condition I sold it fairly cheap to make it go away)

I had good luck with Fed EX Ground. It was not the fastest but for 2500 miles it was about 550 bucks per engine insured for 25K apiece.
Could also track it on the net every step of the way.
Oh yeah, they picked up the motors at my house too.

Don't get the cheapest shipping if it goes by truck,as mentioned above it needs to go by class 85 where its actually fully insured. A buddy of mine bought a 502 mag factory warranty motor from comp products in wis who got it from merc. They sent it the cheapest wat by truck. It showed up damaged (dropped so hard it broke crank),inurance covered it by the POUND which was only for the broken crank,he got less than 100$ for the damage. Comp was not aware of the ins until this happened and ultimately my bud got shafted,Smitty
