A fleet of 31 boats is expected to compete in 13 classes at the Super Bowl Grand Prix -- a high-performance powerboat race beginning at 1 p.m. today at Hollywood Beach.
The race is Super Boat International Productions' 2007 season opener -- the first of 14 races leading up to the world championships in Key West next fall.
Reigning Super Vee world champion Lucas Oil throttleman Nigel Hook of Del Mar, Calif. has switched boats to the Super Cat class. Hook will take over the driver's seat in a 39-foot MTI with twin 525-horsepower engines with Dennis Hillhouse of Shawnee, Kansas as throttleman.
The Lucas Oil team is under a bit of pressure. Their chief sponsor Forrest Lucas -- who has naming rights to the Indianapolis Colts' new stadium -- is attending his first powerboat race, watching from a helicopter, and hoping for victory on both land and sea.
''A whole new challenge,'' Hook said.
Spectators can watch the races free along Hollywood Beach from south of Sheridan Street to Johnson Street. The scoring area and VIP tent will be located in the parking lot of Oceans 11. Wrestling star Hulk Hogan and Fountain Powerboats president Reggie Fountain will hand out awards at 6 p.m. at the bandshell on the Broadwalk at Johnson Street.
''You'll see those boats reaching speeds of 140 to 150 miles per hour, which should be pretty exciting,'' Super Boat International Productions president John Carbonell said. ``It gives the sports fans an opportunity to see a major sporting event the day before the biggest sporting event.''
