I'm looking through some boats in the classifieds and came across the "Red Cloud" Top Gun (http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.com/page-10447.html), and I think it's an awesome looking boat.

However, I've never had any experience with a carbureted blower setup before, and I'm curious as to what can be expected from them as far as maintenance (how often do they need to be rebuilt?), behavior of the engines around the docks, and what disadvantages come along with using blown motors. I tried searching on this topic but couldn't come across any "complete" explanations...

That appears to be a nice clean boat.
I would recommend you have it surveyed.
Blower motors when built properly are just as good
as there NA counterparts.
They pack extreme mid range punch and provide
big horsepower gains.

I dont see intercoolers in the picture so I am assuming the boost is in the 5lbs range.


Some people like it simple I on the other hand would rather be blown then stroked.

HP not over done but I would check out the Bravo 1 drives, that is its max for hp form what I understand, although they may have been beefed up.............

Thanks for the info. Right now I'm really just trying to get a general idea of what to be aware of with engines that have roots blowers; not necessarily looking to buy that boat in particular.

25 yrs running roots type blowers. Never a issue have never
broke a belt.Keep oil in the front case and grease in the back bearings.Check teflon rotor edges if equiped.
Send to the factiory @ recommened inspection time.

If blower engines are built and tuned correctly, they will run and idle as good as a stock HP500 and last just as long before a rebuild.

My blower motors have been turn key for three years and counting. (525sc's turned up with more boost and carb jet changes) I push the throttle back and forth two times to prime it and fires instantly at the turn of the key. I have never had an idle problem ever. I used to break drives before upgrading to IMCO's though
