Default Awl Grip Paint

I applied awl grip paint with the flattening agent to a project I have. I did some trim peises with a 1 to 1 mix and they came out as expected completely flat. I only had enough flattener to apply one coat to the other peises that I wanted a semi gloss on a 1/2 to 1 mix. I applied paint with no additive to get the hide and finished with the semi gloss coat. It came out very shiny. I tried the same mix before but all coats were with the flat mix and got the gloss I wanted. my question is did I just do the mix wrong or cant you put a flat final coat over a gloss coat and get the same affect?
