Default Performance w/o Bottom Paint

Thinking abvout removing my bottom paint and

I have heard different claims about speed increases without bottom paint. Some say 2-3 mph others say up to 10mph.

Any thoughts. Does size of boat matter( bottom was totally re-done).

Tony

i wouldnt count on a big gain unless the bottom paint on your boat is very very rough. i took the bottom paint off my Scorpion and saw no gain at all and i did see a big gain in the work i had to do to keep it clean. i put it back on the following year. do you keep your boat in the water?

Thanks, Glas Dave. No My boat is now on a lift. I iniitially had plans to keep in water however, I bought lift (of course after I had bottom re-done) Thinking about stripping and awlgripping or gel coating???

The local painter tells me awlgrip is okay for short term mooring, not really a concern but I dont want to hurt resale.

What is the best? I have awl grip hull sides.

only gelcoat below the waterline. if the bottom of your boat is in good shape under the paint you may be able to bring it back to life. unfortunatly its a ton of work but its comparable to the work to re gel it. there really are no paints that will survive under water for very long. when i striped my scorpion i just used a few cases of easy off oven cleaner a scrub brush and a power washer. took a few days but worked pretty good.
