Default 496 raw water pump leaking

my raw water pump on my HO is leaking behind the pulley, so i pulled up the parts online and saw where it shows a seal and a crush bearing on the shaft with diff part numbers, so ordered the seal and bearing, but was curious has anybody had to repair this part of the pump if so did you have to replace the shaft and other seals?

You will have to take it apart first and examine the shaft for wear and seal grooves. You will probably need a press , but it can be done with pullers and other tools.

Also when seal goes bad bearings go bad too or vice versa.
Make sure to use the specified grease(my book's out on loan )
It disgusts me that they changed the shaft and put 2 flats on it so that you cannot use an older style part that is availiable aftermarket.
I'm getting a 496 HO in today as a parts motor.
I might need the pump because I'm putting the brackets and accessories and closed cooling system on my 540 otherwise I'll sell it. But won't know for some time.

I would be sure the water is actually coming form the shaft. I discovered a leak on mine early last year and it turned out to be the little brass fitting for my water pressure gauge had cracked and was leaking. For the longest time i thought I had a leak from the transom somewhere as an explanation for water in the bilge.Simple replacement part from Home Depot fixed it.

i have access to a press so thats not a problem, im sure the leak is coming from the seal, got right beside it while it was running. pulley had a little bit of a wobble to it also.
