Default Where to stay in Miami?

My wife and I are taking our first trip to Miami next month, and have no idea where to stay. We want to be near South Beach, hear thats where the best place for people watching is. Other than that, we have no idea where to stay. I dont to spend a fortune, like to stay under $250/night, but want to stay at a really cool place.

Thanks
Corey

South Beach..great time..the Clevelander is great but noisy as its a constant party, but if thats what you want you won't be disappointed and its basically in the center of the strip. There are many good hotels up and down the beach but the only other one I have stayed at is the Betsy Ross at the northern end. There is a Marriot on the southern end. Do a search online, I would think rates would be more reasonavble this time of year. I got some business cards from various hotels when I was there in Feb. and I could post the names and phone numbers if you want. The people watching can't be beat on South Beach.

We stayed at the Crescent during the boat show. You're down right on the strip, prices went bad, decent place to sleep(quiet).

Nicest place is the Delano, they hook you up with the party scene too, but pricey. Might be tough getting a room in the heart of sobe for $250. But check out the Loewes, Tides, Raleigh, National, Sagamore, etc. National and Sagamore, and shore club have the party scene, might be noisy. The marriot on ocean drive on the south end is nice, quieter, and by all the restuarants, and the marina.
