Default Crane HI-6M Advance Setting???

Put a new distributer cap and rotor on last night and after I figured out that the rotor plate had to be modified for the Crane ignition box I began reading through the rest of the manual.

In the advance curves it lists #1 (for HP425/450/465/500 motors) at 14 deg up to 34 starting at 1500 and fully advanced at 3000. The #6 curve (listed for normally aspirated V8's) with the same timing but starting at 1000 and fully advanced at 2500. (Other settings were for SC motors or fixed timing)

Which should I be using??? Or does it really matter much, between those two?

Motor is a JC Performance 468, I believe his fairly standard BBC build up, hydraulic rollers, 850 carb, dart iron heads, roughly around 550 horsepower.

I also found that the retard mode switch was set to 0, which is listed for use with Anson Turbosystems knock sensor??? I switched it to 1, because there is nothing into the brown wire lead for the sensor. (Sounds right, right??? )

Use the # 1 setting. 20* advance all in by 3000rpms. I'm sure JC Perf will confirm this.

That's where I put it. It was previously set at #6, but after reading the manual it seemed to make more sense at #1. The retard switch is at #1, and I set the rev limit to 6000. Also re-gapped the plugs to .045 per the manual too.

I left mine on 6 to get the advance in earlier to get on plane. No problems after 2 years of running.

I would set the rev limiter to a couple of hundred rpm over max hp rpm. 6000 will probably float the valves with hydraulic roller lifters.

Drilling the rotor was the worst part of the install but it came out OK.

I also use #6 setting for the advance per Bob Teaque (Thanks again Bob). I don't remember where the retard switch is set, but I don't think it matters if it is not hooked to the Anson Turbosystems knock sensor. I will look at mine tomorrow and confirm this!

I also agree that the rotor thing is a pain. I wish Crane would sell replacement rotors already set up!

I have mine set on #6 advance and 0 for the retard. JC Performance N/A's.

rev limiter is set on 6400..... They tend to kick in about 3-400 rpm's less than they are set. First hand experience.
