Three people died of apparent Carbon Monoxide poisoning while sleeping onboard a 30 ft. sport cruiser type boat. If you sleep ,on your boat with a generator running get a Carbon Monoxide detector. Only cost a couple 0f bucks and are well worth it . I dont know how to post a link but wbal tvor wjz tv will have the story.

I would think the carbon monoxide detector would be standard.

That is terible, sad news.

That is why we have two in our cabin, one in the main area and another in the v-berth. One might fail but not two.
Some insurance companies require two.

I don't even have a gen set, but I have one for times when we are sleeping and other boats are running them. You just never know.

Many of your better boats come with CO detectors as standard equipment if there's an enclosed cabin.

You wouldn't believe how many I find disconnected during a survey by the owner!

The WJZ report last night stated it was a new boat, I think what they meant was new to them, the pic was of a later 80's Sundancer. Located at the marina around the corner from me. Boat was docked at Parkside, which has dockside electric, can't understand why they would be running the genny at dock.

Lesson learned here, spend the couple of bucks on CO monitor, with or without a gen.

My dad's 1969 Chris Craft has a CO detector in the cabin. We were staying at a restaurant for a halloween party last year with the genny running and the heater cranked. The CO detector went off while we were getting ready. Opened the windows, shut down the genny, turned on the blower. Once it cleared out we left the blower running with the genset on, and shut the generator off overnight.

Scary stuff.

You know... just about everyone here is against emissions regulations on boats, but catalytic converters drastically reduce carbon monoxide emissions. IMO it's the one real benefit of the actual catalytic converter when installed on a boat.

very, very sad. My prayers go out to all the families, especially the 9 children.. Is this only possible on a gas generator, not a diesel generator, please correct me if Im wrong. Thanks Jeff
