Default Haulled a boat off of the USS Forrestal

I wanted to share a story with the forum. About 10 years ago i guy that i do business with asked me to pick up a boat for him in Pensecola. He said that i needed to go in my new Mack truck and lowboy. I lined up all oversize permits, and headed out from central Louisiana.

Upon arrival at a storage yard in Pensacola, I found the boat that i was about to pick up was a 40' single screw personell carrier boat with the name "Forrestal" on the back. The boat was sitting in cribbing to be able to fit on my tri axle low boy. I pulled the 12' wide load back in two days.(I got loaded late, and had to stop at night because of the oversize.)

The boat stayed on a lot for about three years while the owner stripped and rebuilt the boat into a cruiser. The power was a 671 detroit.

The boat got a lot of attention because of the boat it came off of. One of my friends came in from the Navy, and freaked out when he saw it in our town.

I have not hauled a boat since then, but if anyone needs a big one moved, I would be glad to help.

My dad was on the Forrestal for years.

Are there any other OSO members that can say they have been all over that ship?

Christmas 1961... we were living in Norfolk, where the ship was based. It was in port for the holidays and all family members were allowed on board for Christmas dinner. I got a tour I will never forget- one of the best days of my life.

no pix, tho...

I saw the Forrestal at the Philly Navy yard about 7 years ago, tied up next to the Iowa (battleship). It was strange seeing them right next to each other, both the scenes of tragedies, and both in such sad shape. Chilling.
