Default 1.5 Years after build...still o.k. to fire up?

My 496 stroker shortblock was completed 1.5 years ago, and properly lubed with asembly lube/cam lube.

However, I am just now getting around to completing the top end and putting the motor back in the boat. My builder says it should be fine, but I might consider using Joe Gibbs cam break in oil.

Thoughts?

if the cam was prelubed with the heavy thixotropic cam lube , then your engine builder is correct. use normal " new motor" start up procedure and youll be fine if the motor was correct to start with.

Craig,

If it is a hydraulic roller, there really should not be any issues and any good oil should be ok.

If it is a non roller (flat tappet) camshaft I would use the Gibbs oil, or any good oil with a bottle of GM EOS or one of the cam manufacturers additives. If it is non-roller and has double springs, I would also remove the inner springs for the first hour or so of running time. Too many guys have been having problems with flat tappet cams lately and I guess the jury is still out as far as the cause, so I would do everything possible to help the cam out during the initial break in period.

Either way, run it for 45 minutes or so to break it in, then change the oil and filter and cut the filter open to check for any bearing material etc.
