neither will hold up with a 454. There is a SS aplication that came with 454 for one year, but turned out to be not too reliable behind the power

Alpha Generation 2
The Generation #2 Alpha has caused some confusion in the drive area.
As of this date, Gen #2 drives are the latest smaller drive design.
Both the transom assemblies and drives are NOT interchangable with the older units.
The Gen #2 drives have a different mounting hole stud pattern. It LOOKS the same but it's different so
an older Alpha or "R" drive will NOT bolt to a Gen#2 transom and vice versa.
So... if you want a newer style Gen 2 Alpha then you will also need to replace the transom assembly to match it.
One easy way to tell if you have a Gen#2 Alpha is to look at the way the upper is bolted to the lower. A Gen#2 uses through bolts to mate the upper to the lower.
An older Alpha and "R" drives have nuts on studs.

I have seen alpha's hold up to quite a bit of hp. It is all in how you run it! No holeshots and watch airing it out!

After asking the same question about the alpha, researching, I have to agree. It is the way you run the boat, what kind of weight the drive is pushing. If it is light weight and decent power depending on the way you run it, it will last, but abuse it and it will check out..

They're all the same.....

They had the Alpha (first one), Alpha R (Recent), Alpha MR (more recent), Alpha One, and Alpha GenII. I stopped working on this crap in 2000 so I'm sure they came out with something else after this...

The only major difference over the years from what I've seen are changes to the design of the cases but nothing really major.

My set-up behind a BBC. I run it fast,not hard.

That looks scary without external steering.I stripped out a steering arm on a Alpha and about killed my ex and me doing 65.I would think with all that setback there has got to be a ton of wear going on the tiller arm and shaft and gimbal ring.
