Default 1979 Jeep Project

Since the Camaro is finished, I thought that I would post some pictures of my brother's Jeep project. It started as a 1979 CJ-7 with a factory 304 V8 and 3 speed transmission. After years of running up and down the beach and being here on the coast, the body and frame were all but shot due to rust. So, like I did with the Camaro, my brother finally gave in and decided that it was time to tear the Jeep apart and make it new again. It's not going to be anything crazy or exotic, just a brand new 1979 CJ.

The easiest way to fix rust is to send it to the scrap yard and start with something new, especially when there is a lot rust and new parts are easily available.. The original body and frame are both being replaced. The original 304 is being replaced with a crate motor and the 3 speed is being replaced with a 4 speed. Other than that it will be relatively stock. Here are some pics of the body being assembled.

After some searching we found a nice pair of original doors that we are going to use. This Jeep only had a soft top before, but when it is finished it will have both.

The new rolling chassis has been assembled. The frame was powder coated and the other parts were painted. Everything here is new with the exception of the axles, which were sent out and rebuilt.

Here is the body with the doors hanging. They need to be tweaked a bit and we had to make a latch for both sides, but they fit pretty well right from the start.

Here it is as it sits now. The body is mounted and everything is being assembled. The engine and transmission should arrive today. They should fit right into place because the frame was ordered with the correct engine and trans mounts. I will post more pics as we go along.

Looks great. That thing is begging for more lift and 36s though

Nice thinking ordering the frame with the shackle reversal already done. Will help the ride out some. This is a perfect time for a spring over and 36's like jmeng said.
