Default Oil Pressure???

1996
Volvo Penta 5.0FL

Was cruising along just fine at 3200rpm, When I heard some noise from the engine compartment, looked at my oil psi and it was down to near zero....... shut it down........Started up and oil pressure was fine untill I reached 3200 rpm........same noise and no oil psi.

Boat runs normal untill I reach 3200..........Whats going on???

Where to start looking????

Oil change and filter only 20 hrs. ago.

Is it a remount oil filter setup? Sounds like oil is not draining back into block/pan and pump running out of oil supply maybe.

Exactly.

Had a 454 in a pickup a few years ago. It had good oil pressure at idle, but dropped when rpms went up.

The pickup screen / tube fell out of oil pump (they are just pressed in). I tapped it back in a put a tack weld on it. No problems.

Not sure about Volvo, but I thought Mercruiser has a bracket that supports the pickup tube ... ?

If you were to raise the static oil level in the pan (add oil) and note if the rpm of pressure drop goes up, this would tell you if the oil pickup is laying in the pan. Of course this would be for fact finding only. Don't run the engine this way and watch the pressure gage closely for the cavitation signs (dropping).
