Any of you guys running the 28 foot + wood old school boats (restored or modern construction)??? I have been thinking of one here with twins or a big single 540. Anyone had any experience with the ride, handling, and upkeep on it??

Here is the same hull as built by my friends in Eustis, FL. They contracted Charlie Jannace, the Naval Architect for the drawings, it is the same hull as Cake Eater.

Barnstormer has twin Pleasure Craft Marine 6.0 liter 385 hp engines.

I picked up a 1958 chris this week in rough shape to tinker on as a project over the winter and got to looking at some of the larger ones. This will be a lake boat just to cruise on and enjoy. I'm going to do the hull on this one myself as it is in terrible condition. Got to looking at the ones online and bumped into a few, nice looking boats with an old school twist. I grew up with a 1964 Chris Craft Cavalier. 36' foot aft cabin with a pair of 283 Chevies. Great boat and the plywood hull was less work than mahogany and made the boat quicker than you'd expect. Loved the boat, but still a huge pain in the ass!

Damn shame some dirtbag had to burn down the boat barn one winter to try to get his insurance money... My old man keeps one of the melted props on his desk.

One of my co-workers has a few restored antique boats including and original ChrisCraft Cobra. Look for it in the Mount Dora boat show next year.

We have a 1960 16' Century Resorter and my uncle has a 28' 1928 Garwood with a Scripps V-10 and a 1906ish 36' Laker.

The boats run and ride great, but the upkeep is right up there. He gets his boats revarnished every few years to keep them looking new.

I have been in a lot of them with big power. Most recently i took a ride in a 26' with about 550 horse that had a top speed in the mid 70's. One heck of a ride. It even had steps!

If you are interested in new, Mark Mason on Lake Winnipesaukee in Guilford and Phil Spencer of Lakes Region Restoration in Wolfeboro do excellent work.

I am currently in the middle restoration stages of a 1952 28' Chris. It had 130 HP 6cyl. Hercules flatheads, being replaced with 5.7 L Mercs with Hurth transmissions. I am not looking for any top end above 30 or 40 MPH, but I may put headers on it.
