Hello All,
I have a stubborn friend who swears up and down that Mercury Marine Mercruiser products are Ford based. He’s a fellow boater with a Maxum bowrider powered by a small block Merc IO. He’s stuck on the whole Mercury = Ford from the automobile world and just doesn’t get it. I searched the MercuryMarine.com website for the info I need, but came up empty handed.

I’m going to see my friend tonight to beat his azz in pool on his own billiard table and would like a link or some type of hard evidence so I can not only shut him down on his own table, but also show him the error in his ways.

25' nova twin 188's were everywhere............302 ford mercruiser......long way back........mid 70s......

Maxums weren't even around back in the 70's

Ask him where the distributor is located ?
front or back of the engine.

fords are in the front, chevy's are in the rear.

Volvo/OMC did however use some fords up til the early 90's

First, bet your friend $200 that Merc uses GM blocks.

Then, go to this link and show him. If you look under the reliabiltiy heading, it will say "Proven GM cast Iron block". It shows the same under every engine in the features tab.

go to mercruiserparts.com and show him pretty much anything on the "parts lookup with pictures" It's pretty obvious he doesn't know much about motors but you might be able to cross reference some chevy parts to Jegs or Summit or something. Even valve covers will do the trick. Then show him this thread and tell him however many people viewed it also laughed at him.
