I have now owned 3 Garmin GPSs and all have died within about 2 years. The first I thought was just a bad unit, bad luck, try again, the second failure made me wonder, now three dead....I can't say I am impressed with their production quality at all. Has anyone else had a similar problem with Garmin products? What can I get next?

I've had Garmins for the last 10 years... Only problem I ever had was with the 2010C but it was a hand me down so I just bought a new one and had it for about 3-4 years, no problems. I have the 276C now, no problems either.


They'll cost some more dough but the Northstar's are good!

We had a Garmin and had good success with it.

We are looking to out a GPS in the Apache. Looking at Garmin and Northstar. Livorsi has the bezels and in colors for the Northstar, just don't know anything about it (are graphics as good or better than Garmin, etc).

Anyway, no problems with our Garmin and we have several friends that have Garmins and not aware of any problems.

I have a Garmin handheld- It's about 3 years old- no issues yet.
I may be shopping for a larger one soon.
Keep us posted as to what you find that works best.

I have had Garmin in my last 3 boats with no problems at all. I have orderd the new 5212 touch screen for the new build.
Love their charts. Hope you have better luck on your next one whatever that may be.

man that surprises me. i have 4 different Garmin units one of which is about 6 or 7 years old and has been lost in the snow for 5 weeks and also left in my yard for about a month this fall, still works like a charm (its a handheld Summit i use for climbing). Also have a 176 and a 276 that work well. I've had great luck with the Garmin stuff but if i was to go with a different unit it would be a Lowrance I-Way, nice unit and works with the boat or the car. I looked into them and they have very detailed marine and road maps as well as an internal 30gb hard drive for mps's and is XM ready. Are you looking for a marine specific gps or multi purpose?

I agree with Dave , if I was gonna try another , lowrance is worth a look. I have had great luck with my garmins. I am a dealer and have personal preference for garmin brand . Wish i had bought their stock a year ago too!!!! The one I have in the scarab developed lines across the display , of course out of warranty @ 5 years old , I call garmin , $100 for the repair , took them 2 weeks to turn around. They updated the software ( i never did ) and replaced the screen and the case. Its faster than when I first got it !!!

Magellan. The original handhelds used by the military. Had a couple that only got outdated, not broken.

I had two handhelds, 76C or S, an old 12D(?), and a 176C. They all died without any obvious cause/abuse/falls/accidents, they just croaked.
