Looking at a new or 07 Chevy ext cab short box 4X4. I drive alot, and want the power of the 6.0L but don't know how bad its going to be on fuel. So.....who has one, and what are some real world numbers?

Motor is a dog, the 5.3 seems to rev more freely than the 6.0. I drove the 6.0 for about 3 blocks and hated it, bought a 5.3. Both were in stripper work trucks that I wasn't going to be driving anyway but I like the 5.3 better than my Duramax for daily driving. A 1500 5.3 truck rides great, burns the tires everytime you put your right foot down and can easily get mileage in the high teens.

most I have owned have been around 12 mpg a little worse when towing something . but with the price of gas vs diesel now it's sometimes had to justify a duramax unless you tow something heavy .I have foung a good custom computer tune in the 6.0 can help gas milage 3-5 mpg

Ive got an LQ9...votec max....6.0. Not the same 6.0 motor as in the 2500's. I love it. Hauls azz in my truck. Has 4.10's, 14bolt, and 4L70 version of the 60E. Yanks my 27 fever around like nothing. That being said I dont think the 6.0 in the 2500's has enough balls with the heavier truck and less hp. I get from 8-13.5 around town. Depending on if I want to feel it.

I had a 2500 6.0 and pulled 31ft cat for a year. They are a little sluggish up hills but they can do the job safely. Mine had a 3.73 gear, a friends 3500 with 4.10 gears pulled much nicer although worse non towing gas mileage compared to 16mpg highway that I got unloaded. They both got poor fuel mileage around town. do not consider the 5.3 as you get smaller brakes,differentials and the very weak 4L60E trans. The 6.0 is the smallest engine with the upgraded driveline. aside from my diesel I would consider a 6.0 again, just get the gearing for your application..4.10 if you want to tow....3.73 if mpg's are your goal. I bought one a (07 HD w/ a 6.0 w/ 4.10's) couple months ago, as far as mpg I've seen anywhere from 13-16 combination city/hwy. My boat weighs 6500 on the trailer and it pulled it around no problem. Like was mentioned the HD has bigger frame, disc rear brakes, 14 bolt, hydroboost, etc, etc. I couldn't justify the cost of the diesel, the 6.0 fits my needs perfectly. Plus don't forget the 07's and up have a 6-speed behind the 6.0 too. Not the Allison but still.

I guess I should have mentioned this is a half ton I am looking at. So..do the brakes get smaller with the 5.3 in the half tons? I wouldn't think so.

Breaks are the same on all 1500's. vortec max trucks have better trans and rear end. 1500hd's have better frame and brakes, but cannot get HO 6.0 motor.

Had both the 6.0 (4:10 gears) and 5.3 (3:73) pulling the same boat and the 6.0 pulled and held hills WAY easier then the 5.3. I could use the cruise control with the 6.0 where as the 5.3 it was just not possible as any little incline it'd want to downshift.

The 5.3 was 5 MPG better though non-towing. About the same towing. One thing I love about the 2500HD is it's much more stout for towing then the 1500.
