Default Powder vs. Paint

I am sure this has been posted before. Please send me the link if you know it. Anyway, have 2 sets of Alpha transoms completely stripped to bare metal. Should I go to the expense of powder coating? Or should I just use the typical painting process I read about on this forum? If powder then what is the best to use? Fresh water only and climate storage when not in use. Thanks for any info you got. Any recommendations on a shop for powder with experence?

If you powder coat they have to be heated up, if they are not torn apart the seals may get hot and go bad, I would paint them with imron, if they were arneson drives I would powdercoat them.

I have them completely disassembled and stiped to bare metal. Anyone know the Mercury Marine process and products they use. It was really tough getting the old paint off.

If you powdercoat, they would need to be pre-finished in some way. Powder doesn't bond to metals the way paint does. That's why you often see powder peeling off in sheets. One scratch and the corrosion wicks under the powdercoat. We've used zinc phosphate on steel and anodizing on aluminum. Merc uses something else but I can't recall what it is.

Powders come in epoxies and polyesters. Some hybrids too. They're no different strength-wise than the equivalent spray-on products. Powder coating has become more popular with manufacturers mostly because of production efficiencies and environmental restrictions. Low VOC paints are somewhat more expensive as are fume recyclers. Powder cycle times are also much faster.

Did my tabs with Dupont Chromate Epoxy DTM primer followed by Imron. 10 years and not a bubble or chip.
