Guys looking for a bit of Oil advise, I have a 600 HP 496 (Tyler Crocket Motor). Last season I ran the Mobil1 15-50 as it seem to be one of the site favorites. Tword the end of the season it kind of dawned on my I have 130 degree T-stat and my motor never really heats up.

I am thinking I will need to adjust the oil weight to compesate for this, just do not know what direction to go with the weight and how much of a change.

Mobile one does not have a ton of viscosity options listed on there site.

Just a reminder...Mobil 1 15w-50 is for flat tappets.

I would be more concerned with getting some temps in the engine. I get a little nervous with running a motor that cool. What is your oil temp? If it dosent get up to proper operating levels about all you get is a high pressure without proper distribution.

I use ONLY use Pennzoil 50w and run without TStat. With the stock 700SCI oil cooler I run it takes a year to get the oil warmed up but WOT it never moves over 240.

i would call Tyler and see what he would use, need to know water and oil temps plus bearing clearances to pick right weight oil

Thats the first time i have heard that.

I run oil thermostats to get the oil up to 212 degree with straight 50 wt. Cold water temps are ok, cold oil is not. There is debate about full synthetic oil causing roller lifters to slide and cause flat spots on the roller. That is what I have read, maybe someone can say for sure.

Why is that????? I highly doubt that all the new performance cars that use Mobil1 synthetic as OEM are running flat tappets. I've heard the rumor that its so slick that the rollers on the lifters don't roll and just slide. I'm gonna call bs without any proof. I've run Mobil1 15-50 with roller cams with no issues.


Now to JBoats question. Your 130* water temp has little do with the oil temp. If you are not getting condensation in your oil, the oil temp is plenty hot at 220*
I ran M1 15-50 in my 525SC with a bigger roller cam and stock 140* tstat and my water temps never went above 150*. The mobil 1 oil was used for 400+hrs in that engine.

My 540s never get above 180 at WOT. I run straight 40w Valvoline. I haven't seen any evidence of condensation. Water temps are low.

New performance cars don't use Mobil 1 15w-50...And is "not fill approved" by GM, Ford, Chrysler, MB, BMW, VW, or any other ACEA auto builder.
