The son was a member of the Offshore Power Boat Club and the father is a well known abalone diver.
Shortly after they broke these records the APBA (Australian) changed the rules and the costs. It would need some serious dollars to break these records now as each record attempt has the same safety requirements and is charged at the same rate as a race event.
The boat is an ex racer that had done very well in its day. It raced a few times in production class in the last few years but unless it was pretty rough, the ski boats would beat it home. We were in the same situation with our old cat.
Last I heard the boat was for sale with no engines.
