As I approach my 36 month anniversary on my 350, I am getting tons of extended warranty pitches.

I thought the drive train was 10/100,000 miles? I suppose that is nothing but the internal oiled components?

Why would I fork out another $2K??

After dealing with a couple of extended warranty companies, I would only get something that I bought from the dealer with the FoMoCo label on it. They are ALL a PITA to deal with, but if you feel like forking over the cash, get the one that you don't have to do ANYTHING to get coverage; i.e. fork over cash at service, and wait for reimbursement, and/or "call it in" before service, etc. etc. If you do buy it from the "stealer", beat them up on price. Many of them are 50% profit for the dealer/finance person selling the warranty.

But what will be covered that is not already on the 10/100K factory coverage? Will they just look for reasons to deny coverage?

Ive had more ford hd's in for trannys then chevys,BY FAR. Buy the warranty if you plan on keeping the truck forever,if your turning it in next year or so save your money,Smitty

I admit Chev has the best tranny but it ends there.

I usually get a new rig every other year but I just can't embrace the new nose on the 08's. So... will probably hang on an extra year or two.

Now just to figure out whether the warranty is worth it and just exactly does it cover that your drivetrain warranty doesn't?

the only way a dealer can sell you an extended warranty is if your vehicle is still covered under the factory 3/36. if the 3/36 bumper to bumper has expired then you either have to bring the vehicle into the dealer for an inspection IF THERE EVEN WILLING TO DO SO or go to an aftermarket warranty company. the 10/100 is on THE ENGINE ONLY...NOT DRIVETRAIN

The dealer who first brought this up tried to tell me the 10/100,000
doesn't cover squat. That is why I am trying to determine what it really does cover and is an extension worth it.

2112, I just went through this question of Ford warranty. I have a '04 F550 with 97K on it. Always babied and maintained vehicle as I need her reliable on a daily basis. Took her in for:

1. "Stumble" while accelerating from 40 up to 60MPH.
2. Toxic and stinky smoke upon starting.
3. Hard starting which sometimes took 3 tries to turn over.
4. No shift from 3rd to 4th while getting up to speed on the freeway. Not a good thing rolling @ 3800RPM and only doing 60MPH. Tow/haul light occasssionally lit up.

My dealer was looking for $100 deductible for each motor complaint. Only motor is covered by Ford. EGR cannister, turbo, and all 8 injectors were replaced. This took 2 weeks to diagnose and repair.

Off to the trans side of the dealership. The mechanics found metal shavings in the oil. They suggested dropping the transmission for inspection. All 8 forward and 4 reverse gears and clutches "smoked". Reman trans installed was quoted to me @ $5500. I told them to bag up the parts. I shouted at Ford Corporate. I was not going to pay the ridiculous price.

Long story short, I am back in my truck. Ford stepped up and covered the trans and motor parts. I paid out for the $100 dedectible and $1000 to remove/replace trans. Ford even stepped up for the rental truck for the month and paid half.

And now the truck runs like new. I am experiencing smooth starts, extending fuel mileage back up to 15.5, and correct shifting.
