Default Garmin 5208 - Will it fit in my 28 daytona?

I want to install a Garmin 5208 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=148&pID=9157) gps unit on my 28 Daytona ICC in the middle of the dash between the canopies. Has anyone done this? What about the structural implications of cutting a large hole there? The cut out would be around 7"hx10"w.

Do you really need a permanently mounted unit? Im not a big fan of em but ultimately its your boat and if your needs call for it,then it should work out OK. as for the structure. Cant see it causing an issue.

Running around up here in the puget sound, gulf islands and further north requires something more than a hand held so I want to put something in that i don't have to charge etc. It would double as a video display which is a nice add. I was looking at the small northstar which is much cheaper and has the smartcraft interface, but it's not touch screen and has a bigger footprint and the 5208 is pushing it size wise already. Also, I also am not sure that I will always have mercury motors in the boat.....so Smartcraft isn't the biggest deal.

I attached a pic of how the install ended up. It obviously did fit!

Here are a few pics of the cowl that I made to cover the wiring underneath.

Did I mention that the Garmin 5200 series are amazing units? If only it did smartcraft. Maybe someday.....

Thanks! John @ Eastside Offshore did all the hard work (wiring, gps and unit install) though.
