Default BAD weather in LI Sunday night

I hope no one else got caught in the horrible storm that hit LI sunday around 5pm. We were at a cove on the back side of shelter island when the sky went black..... needless to say it was f*****g scary! Ill post some more details about our 'adventure' later when my hands stop shaking.

We got back like 45 min before it broke loose. You could see it coming though. As we were coming in i think we saw you going through the breakwater. Looked good. During the storm we were at a Dock an Dine right there on the water and saw everyone running in and through it. Just glad we got back!! I wasnt sure if the storm went over there to LI but i guess it did.

The storm was very bad out there. We had 2 big trees go down in our yard on Shelter Island. And my dads center consule took a beating at the dock. My buddy who runs the Sea Tow out there told me there was many boats up on the beaches after the storm went thru. Glad you made it back okay. Have any pics?

We we in a cove on the back side of Shelter Island when we say the sky turn black. Pulled anchor and took off. Thank god our boat moves, cause we left a whole bunch of other boats behind as we took off to get to Mitchell Marina next to Claudio's. The seas picked up from 1-2' to 4-5' as we got over to the marina. Could barely see a thing, and Im lucky the Shelter island ferry had their light on, since I used them to navigate over to the marina. There were on 2 other boats docked which was kinda shocking since there were so many people out.
As we came into the marina, I jumped onto the deck to tie up the rope while my boy was driving. The rain was falling from the sky, but going sideways, at appx 3-40 mph. The rain started to hurt bad, felt like someone spraying me with a fire hose. The wind was pushing me across the deck, and I had to hold onto the side rails to keep my balance on the knees. spun the boat around and nosed into the dock. Luckily another guy was running down to his boat and I was able to throw him the rope. I jumped off the deck onto the dock somehow (superman kinda) and got the stern rope and tied it up. By this point in time, you couldnt hear a damn thing the wind and rain was so hard and fast at least 40mph+ according to the people in the marina office.
Jumped back down and grabbed the cockpit cover. trying to battle the wind, my buddy and I got it almost fully covered and realized the girls were in the cabin. I slid down the sunpad and back seat and yelled at them to get the hell out. My boy was stuggling to hold the cover and his shorts up from the wind. Got them out and grabbed the cover pole. And of course, a nasty lightning bolt stuck across the water and I felt some of it through the pole. that shook me a bit. finished covering the boat and jumped to the dock and sprinted down to the office.
As we all were standing there, all you could hear was wind and rain like Ive never seen it before and so much lightning, at least a bolt every 3-4 seconds. you couldnt hear the thunder cause of the wind and rain, but you could feel it in your chest.
Shelter Island looked like it got hit wicked bad with lightning, there were a bunch of ambulances heading over the ferry after the storm lessened a bit.
There was another boat who came in at the end of the storm. Looked to be a 46+ cabin cruiser fishing boat with flybridge. Huge boat. I was talking to the guy and he said they came from Plum Island at the Gut. He saw funnel clouds and the waves were crashing up to his flybridge. His electronics showed 60kt winds and gust upwards of 90kts.

I was listening to the VHF before the sky blackened and it said "conditions are favorable for server weather, watch in effect at 5pm. It hit us at 4:35. Thanks for the warning.... And the coast guard channel sent out a tone and warning signal at 5:15 for eminent danger.
According to the weather channel, this storm was of epic perportions and highly unlikey and rare for this area.
I was told that boat moored at the Pavilion were drifting free and dragging the moorings due to to heavy winds. What a day........

We watched it roll across Branford Harbor...thank goodness we were hauled out for the day...couldn't see 100 yards...run-off wiped out a piece of the beach...but the thunder and lightning were an awesome sight from the shelter of our well stocked, little porch!

It took 2 of his boats to pull Bissett's boat from the beach. Big bucks but chump change to them.
