my first question would be , are you doing the work yourself , or does 3500 have to cover a mechanic and parts ?
if soo , 3500 bucks will basicly get you a pro-charger and install , a very notable increase in performance , but it will cut the life of the engine in half if your non mag engine is the cast internals
if your have the ability to do the work , 3500 will cover set of used rect port heads , intake , carb , and camshaft ,496 exhaust and needed gaskets to assemble , keep in mind that again if you have cast internals in your engine your gonna wanna use a cam profile that keeps max rpm below 5k

just my .02 , so far basicaly the same things are working great in my engine

It's a half spent 2 bolt main engine.

I agree selling it may bring in enough along with the $3500 to get something new with more power and reliability.

Rebuilding is not a bad idea....if you can find a builder who is reasonable priced and will bore it out ..new cam..headers maniflow...etc.

Bolting thigns on an engine with 200 hrs will result in problems..

Put a straight edge on the back 15 feet of the bottom &
make sure it's perfectly straight to the transom.( no hook )
Wet sand & buff the bottom of your tabs & drives.

Start there for some cheap speed !

There are some exceptions to the rule, but either way you slice it, you will need a better breathing exhaust system. Adding go fast upgraded induction parts like cams, intakes, ported heads, etc, are not going to make your boat go faster if you do not get rid of the exhaust efficiently such as an aftermarket (better breathing) exhaust system. So, you might as well get that expense out of the way and spend the money for it now because without it you're only going to be frustrated if/when you begin to buy/add upgraded go fast parts.

The exception to the rule is if you add a supercharger/blower you can side step the use of an aftermarket exhaust and still retain the stock exhaust system---but depending on the cam being used you need to be careful of water reversion with some systems/set-ups, but blowers still run much better with a good exhaust system---most engines do.

If it was my money I would buy a better breathing aftermarket exhaust system FIRST---but that's just me. Whatever you do I hope it goes well for you---have fun.
