Most days I would like to strangle the Marine Radio voice that says, WAVES 1 foot or less, ya maybe in his KOI pond. Hang on baby. KS

LMAO! I know exactly what ya mean...we were out with some girls some years back and radio was calling for waves 1-3 feet...we went down river over to that bar on the North Branch formerly known as "Slow Down life's too short" anyway we leave about 1am and radio is still calling the same thing out......we go through the locks and get out past the break wall and get a HUGE surprise when the nose of the boat goes up and over a crest and stuffs the nose into the face of the next wave and soaks us all!!! Were in a 30' scarab, waves were more like 10-12's!!!! took us almost 45min of zig-zagging to get from navy pier over to Diversey harbor!!! We couldnt get up on plane cause the waves were too big and spaced too close appart! Thats the one (and hopefully only) trip i ever had in a boat where i think i needed to change my shorts afterwards!

Must be a woman making those measurements. If it were a man, the 10'ers would be more like 4'ers.

For what its worth...

I am probably the opposite of most, with more boating experience on the big lake than the chain, but I will say this.

I have been out in Lake Michigan during rough times in baots as small as a 17' Sea Ray, and I largely think people over-dramatize it. Yes it does get really bad, but you listen to the marine radio (which agreed sometimes downplays the conditions) and you make an educated decision weither to go out or not.

Also, I can run for miles on the lake front and not have to worry about running a boat a-ground. My experience on the chain was not the same. I was wake boarding in what appeared to be the middle of a large body of water, I go to get back in the boat and to my surprise the water is barely above my waist. That combined with the zoo the chain can often become keeps me away. I would rather crash over waves than wake after wake off other boats.

Ill take the big pond thank you. I do understand why some prefer the chain though...

Better learn to watch for shifts in the wind and key an eye to the sky! I have boating on the pond for 30 yrs and I have never been caught in any water I didn't want to be in.
