went to look at a fiberglass repair,,,and have a question?? repair area is about 12inches long and 4inches wide,also about 3/8 to 1/2 deep,you can see the pink fiberglass,we can see a fan under the repair area,,its been on 4 straight days,,today we went to looks at it and you can tell there has been a small amount of grinding on area,when we touched the repair area it was sticky,,,is this from the water in the fiberglass,,,,or from opening up the area,,,or it this just some sort of chemical use to soffen the fiberglass and its just part of the repair process,,,???

If it is in the repair process it sounds as if someone didnt use enough or any hardener.. It shouldnt take the right stuff 4+ days to harden & cure especially with it being summer.. Fiberglass usually should be cure within an hour or less, even epoxy should be cure within 24 hrs or less depending on type of hardener used in the summer season. If it's gooey after 4 days something sounds like it may be wrong.... Jamie / Lakeside

Like Jamie mentioned sounds like someone forgot the hardner .... even the West marine # 105 is ready for sanding & gel coat next morning good luck

could also be that they did the initial bulk of the repair in epoxy and were trying to fair it with a poly based resin filler. in that case the amine in the epoxy inhibits the poly from setting up.

and as Jamie asked, is this a dedicated fiberglass shop? Need some more tech info to get you pointed in the right direction but as stated above any proper repair should have cured long ago.

Old vinyl resins would do that. The grinding warmed them up and softened the resin. The pink is probably the coring- like Divinycell. Side of the boat, right?

SOME MORE INFO,this is on a 07 baja ,,the boat has no wood in it except the transom,,,it took a hit on the very back of the pad,,yes its in a glass shop,,,but i dont know if the glass guy is familier with baja and the liner system,,,,i cant tell when its ready to get repaired,,,dosent seem to be dry,,,after 5 days with a fan under it,,,iam thinking that the glass guy is still thinking its wet,,,,when it really isnt,,and just part of the liner system,,baja system,,,so now the question is,,,, would you start to do the repair?????its just dosent look any dryer after each 24 hour of drying time, meaning every day it looks the same,,,so is it ok to start to finish the repair,,,,,iam just having a hard time trying to figure out if its ok to finish the repair
