can anyone tell me the difference between a conventional prop and a surface piercing prop i seen a turbine boat with a asd 8 and the prop looks like a conventional prop i think it was an osborne

Its position behind the boat. High rake plays a part. Cleavers may have been the first used in a surfacing situation.

Conventional = cheap$ Surface (cleaver) = expensive$

yea i have a surface drive at the mo but was thinking about trying on a conventional prop how would it work if at all what makes the props so different

The surface drive props are stronger,if you put a conventional prop on there you are going to lose some blades

so if i had a strong convetional prop it will work

I doubt it.

A freind has thrown blades off of 6 blade hering props twice behind diesel power with surface drives.

What is the advantage of surface drives, beside the rooster tail?

Less drag, more speed, smaller draft. Several advantages, Not many disadvantages. Some may say they are harder around the dock but once you get used to it there is no problem. I never had much problem docking when I had a rig with some arnesons. Bulletproof.
