I have a 30 Scarab II on LOTO and I am thinking about moving to a larger boat. How would a 38 handle the rough water? What are the diferent styles of Scarab 38's and how do they differ? I am looking a little older as money is a factor.

Can't beat the ride. Some criticize them for their weight and refer to them as wave smashers, but I'll take that when the going is rough. Kamma 38s were an earlier version of the KVs. The KVs were built until 88. In 89 the euro styled 38s went into production.

You had 3 different kinds of 38's that were built up untill the late 80. T he first one that came out was a raised deck version that you could get with staggered drives. The second kind was also a raised deck that came with side by side motors. The third kind was the flat deck ( sometimes refered to as the Kamma version) that ONLY came with side by side motors. All three of these kinds of boats had the same lower hull design, just different deck configurations. Most of the 38's had a side by side bolster seat up front. The seperated bolster seats did not come around untill about 86. The early 38's went by the names of 377. 377 SE, Kamma. Only a couple of the early (80 or 81) hulls had a notch in the transom. Board member 38KV has one of the few boats that has a notch. Around 86 Wellcraft renamed the flat deck 377 SE to 38KV. The hulls are identical ( except for a few that had the transom notch). 1988 was the last year for the 38KV with the flat deck, after this Wellcraft went to the Euro design called the Excel with the more rounded dash fairing. Sometime after this they came out with the Thunder series.

I don't have expert opinions, but the 38 will handle the water way better than the 30. I think if you research that, you'll agree. WOW. Sorry, just pointing out the obvious

I'll tell you from my personal experiance- my 38' Scarab (1998) does ride better than a 31' Scarab(1993), but not a HUGE difference like you would think. The difference was huge going from my 22' Scarab (1995) to my 31'. Obviously we are talking about a 3250 lb single > 8400 lb twin vs. a 8400 twin>10200 lb twin, but I have ridden in other large boats (such as a 28' Nordic) and can say that the 31' Scarab was WAAAAY better.

OUCH, I guess I SHOULD have said comparing not just the lenght but hull design.
VS, it and others. But I like what I have heard like I can go older and still get the same bottom hull.

Was a well proven race hull. Was never any need to change it.

From the boats I have onwned pachanga 32, formula 242, scorpion 230 ltd, scarab 30s and now a 377 i must stay that the scarabs are by far the best ones. The 377 is a awesom wavechrusher.... I am thinking of trading up to an apache but I dont know if its worth the money......

One last question, would a 34 Scarab III be worth looking at? Or stick with the 38?
