Question Best Way to fill in a Notch on a Transom

I thought I'd start here to get some answers from the professionals and those who know a heck of a lot more about this than myself.

Well were in the final stages of getting my new Arneson 7M's installed and came across a little problem. It seems mine has a notch that might need to be filled in order to get the drives low enough for the "X" dimension.

I did a little research and from what I can gather the 3600's were made with several different designs. Some have a notch and others don't.

We have a person down at the lake who does a lot of glass work and is capable of doing it but wanted to know what does it involve to fill a portion of it in correctly? What are the best materials to use and to finish it off with?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd really like to get this done and back in the water for some fun this year.

Jim

looks like your not filling in the notch but will have to extended the bottom and transom so that you will have room on the inside to lower everthing ?

it doesn't appear to be that bad but i'd like someone who does this type of work to at least make a comment... i've looked at quite a few 3600's and some have the same notch others it's smaller and some don't have any at all.... worst case senario is that i shell the thought of putting on the ASD7M surface drives and pick up a pair of Sixes, i already have the transmissions that will work for either one...at this point it's not about money as much as it is about getting the boat back in the water...

the reason I was saying to call nortech is that they have the molds. They might be able to make a fill in for notch. That would be much easier and cleaner job.

i hear you, it might be a good option, but none of these boats are exactly alike...they might look the same but they are all a little bit different in some ways...we were going to replace something as simple at the center bracket that houses the speedo and attaches to the windshield since mine had a crack in it...come to find out they are all hand fabricated, they start with the same casting and then are manually fitted to each boat... according to one of thier guys it usually takes eight hours just to fit one up.... so the chance that they have something might be a long shot but if needed worth a try...i couldn't get a hold of the guys doing the work to see if they had worked something out with Rik with Arneson to see what options will work...seems they are putting race boats in the water down at the lake today and not working on mine...i guess there's some big race this weekend....go figure...LOL..

Default nortech

all the boats came out of the same mold. i think nortech uses an insert in the mold to make the notch or leaves it outand then you have no notch.

as for filling in the notch, like the other guy said probably will not work, since this won't make room on the inside. even if yuo used bpm setup that puts the drop box on the outside there would be no way to attach it with bolt if you simply pad the notch flush to the bottom. if your going to do it properly your probably going to have to cut that section out and do some major structural glass work.

I was thinking that same thing myself but couldnt remember how the lower part of the drop box mounted. Yea i guess that would be a big project taking into account that you would have to access the inside when all is said an done. I would think the best way would be to get a piece pulled from the original mold and go from there and yes it will be an advanced project.

Dave didnt you have to fill a notch at the back of your DW? How'd you do that?

How ya doing getting ready for Key West? We still have an empty bilge Any idea whos coming yet? only ones i know of so far from up here in class 1 are us and Jacks.

Default two empty spots

the 32 has a transom notch in the mold, so when the boat was built for the arnesons they did not lay up glass in that area and when it came out of the mold the made some flat panels and vacuum bagged it together. doug said it added alot of extra work. dont think it would be worth to try to get nortech to make that piece, since their just flat panels. somebody's gotta lot of grinding to do!!!

glassdave, we currently have two empty bilges. found the problem to be a certain parts, so had to change them in the other motor as well. so hopefully they gett'um done. still gotta dyno and break'em in and get ready for kw. but things are on schedule so all should be good. lotta chat about evil ed's boat up for sale???
whats the story??
