Default Boat Thieves Caught in Action in Orlando

One for the good guys.

Man Catches Suspected Boat Thieves In Action
Tuesday, November 25, 2008 – updated: 7:09 am EST November 25, 2008

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Orange County man said he watched as a group of suspected thieves stole his boat and then drove off. The boat owner then jumped in his truck, called 911 and followed them.

The owner of the boat told deputies he caught two men and three of their friends stealing his boat from his home on Gregory Road (see map) near the Econ Trail. He said the thieves hooked the boat up on a white pick up truck and took off, but the man said he hopped in his black truck and chased them onto the 408 until they hit Dean Road.

"They ran over a curb and got a flat tire so they couldn't drive anymore and they bailed on foot," said Spike Hopkins of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

A sheriff's helicopter was following the suspects. Three of the men were caught trying to hide in a wooded area along the 408. Deputies caught the other two suspects hiding by the side of a home, behind an air conditioner unit, next to the highway.

Deputies also used their police dog to aid in the search. One of the accused thieves groaned in pain as he laid on the ground while paramedics treated him for several police dog bite wounds.

Another suspect admitted that he was using a crack pipe before Orange County deputies arrested him.

"Have you been doing powder or rocks in the last eight hours?" asked an Eyewitness News photographer.

"I had powder," the suspect responded.

"These types of people are committing crimes over and over to support their habit," said Hopkins.
