Default Does a distress sale set the market?

There are some stellar bargains on used right now. We all know that.

My question: Does a single distress sale of a certain model set the market price?

I usually argue that it does NOT.

Lately though, I am led to believe that it does.

My reasoning is that even though we all recognize a distress sale when we see it, it becomes market.

Too many experts here will be sure to point out the previous sales prices when other boats come up for sale.

You hear people,( not pointing fingers), say things like:

1) Why should I pay xx when you only paid yy last year.

or

2) That boat isn't worth aa because so-n-so just paid bb for a similar model.

Many other examples I'm sure out there.

Anyone else have a thought?

It seems a small number of people HAVE to sell at any price. Those few sales, coupled by the large increase in discounted repo sales have made most any good, clean used boat a tough sell. Why should I pay reasonable market price on a boat when there are several similar boats (that might need a little work) available at 60-70% of that price......personally, I'm willing to gamble and buy the boat that needs a few things to make it "right".

it sure does in real estate. any apprasial will show the low dollar home. its killing the housing market with the "short sales". i would assume the same applies to boats...cars....ect. sucks but that is a sign of the times. Funny thing...never seen people on here *****in when they were getting top dollar for there crap. BUYERS market.

not to stir the pot but its everyones fault things got to this point. prices were going through the roof everyday and times were good and we just kept payin more and more and livin large. Moderation is not in the average americans vocabulary. Now we look at the situation were in and the finger pointing begins.

Anything that's actually selling is a distress sale.
