Default I am intrested in racing got a few questions

I have been working on restoring a Banana for the past few years. When I bought the boat it had a pair of merc o/bs. The transom was cut. I am finishing off the transom so i can either hang an o/b on the back with a bracket or a bbc. What type of hp do I need to race class 6. I know some guys are putting huge hp in the class 6 boats just not in the budget. what are the difrent boats running for hp. Are twin o/bs legal in class 6? Thanks guys for helping this newbie.

Hey Josh

Welcome aboard,

I think all class 6 boats must be singles and looks like most guys are running some sort of big block. I dont think there are any O/B's at all. As far as rules go check out the OPA web site @ http://www.oparacing.org/ This is the link to allot of questions you may have and the rules. I am sure some of the more experienced guys will also chim in. All I can say is Offshore Racing was a dream of mine for many years and OPA allowed us to make that dream come true. It is a great organization full of great people all of which are willing to help any one at any time.

We run a Mercruiser 496 Mag HO. While class 6 had some big
HP boats in the past, Smitty moved them into class 5. Your
best bet is to contact Smitty directly (address at OPA site)
and get his input.

Hello,

I am OPA biggest fan and my best suggestion for you is to contact Smitty....he is the man and will be able to help you in any way he can. He is the man of his words....His contact information is on the website (www.oparacing.org).

Good luck, buddy

Twin engine boats are not allowed in class 6, if your run 2 egg beater plan on class 5 (75mph limit).

I would think a nice mild 450/500hp. would be pretty cheap to build and very competitive in class 6, but I have seen people with bigger engine lose and people with smaller engine win.. Its all how you drive and rig it.

Maybe a lightweight 450/475hp SB 383 stroker would be another option.

Is this the old "Spoiled Banana"? Anyway, welcome to OPA! I can't speak for others in class 6, but I have NO objection to you racing in our class. I'm sure others will speak up. I think the intent of the rule was geared towards twin inboards. As long as you run stock 225's or 200's , I think this would be fair for class 6. The larger the field, the better the racing!!!
For what it's worth, I run a 482 BBC, maybe 500 horse, bone stock Bravo I, 24' Sunsation.
