Default Should I buy this BIG HP motor, and run at LOTO Shootout?

My friend has the motor out of his 26' Daytona. It is a 632 with Pontiac heads, 1671 w/intercooler that dyno'd at 1400hp w/race fuel. It sounds like you can run on less boost and use pump gas, but I know he never has and normally uses 110 av gas. I would be putting it in a 28 Eliminator EagleXP, and I think I would have a really good chance of wining that class, if I can keep a drive together.
History of motor; I'm guessing he has around 150 hours on it, and it has been refreshed every 50 hours, so I'm not sure if it needs gone through now, but I'm pretty sure it needs at least valve springs and maybe valves/lifters/rockers. Not sure about hours on bottom end. I can get more details from his engine builder. I know it has all the best stuff in it, but how much extra to refresh is a big question.

He sold the boat without the motor and bought a new 33 Daytona Eliminator with custom 1500HP motors.

Main question right now is, am I getting in over my head? I might be able to pick it up relatively cheap, so what would be a fair price to offer him. He keeps asking me how much I think it's worth and we never come up with a price, so Help me out with this please. rockie

A 33 daytona with 3000HP? Sounds like he is the one getting in over his head! Sounds like a fun ride though!

You didnt say what boat you're putting the motor in, is it a 28?

It is a 28ft Eagle.
My friend ran around 130 in the Daytona, and yes he is humble and crazy, but into speed. I helped tune things on it at LOTO last year and it hits 140 in a heart beat. Very fun and stable at that speed, but not sure if I want to be in it at 170-180 when he gets the bugs worked out.

Ok, av gas is no good for auto based perf engines, has octane but the specific gravity is not good on these engines, need cam2 or simular race fuel to be safe, the other issue with those engines is breaking crankshafts, and with a lot of boost thats going to shorten that even more....my .02...Rob

Are you running a bravo setup?? If so your going to make some drive builder very rich!! Im also thinking a Eagle is a V-bottom only designed for a certain speed then its a chine walking machine. Nice boat but not built for the kind of speed your looking for.I would also talk to Bob and see whats the max HP rating if you plan on having legal insurance. Also Av Gas is no good for sea level running engines. I would say no!

Keep the boost and run her on 93 octane and inject her with Methanol.

We run approx 15 gallons of Meth to every 200 gallons of 93 pump gas.

We haven't had to purchase race fuel in 3 years. We still net the same power results @ 14 lbs or more boost, running meth injected pump gas that we did running straight 114 Sunoco.

Wink The Astronaut Farmer?

If you want to go really fast at LOTO or anywhere ELSE! Go buy a boat designed and built for those kind of horspowers and speed numbers. If you choose otherwise and put that kind of power in a Eagle V-hull just go buy a lot of life insurance for you family and siblings!

Best Wishes,
Ray @ Raylar

Thanks for the input guy's.
Hotpursiut, you are right about the drives. That's actually a big concern about the drives, and safety when they blow up. DareDevil, where's the dare in the devil. You got to admit the acceleration would be pretty awesome.
The motor needs to be gone through, so I actually thought I would detune it with a less radical cam and maybe produce a more docable, smother running motor that would last longer between rebuilds. Hun, still drive issues!
So what kind of power do you think this boat can handle? It was in a 26 Daytona, and I know it seemed to do ok in that boat. I know V ver CAT!
Life Insurance, life could happen to most of the boater in LOTO.

I understand why you want it.......big hp, the sound, the whole nine.

I think the chine walk is gonna be your biggest hurdle. I believe there was a 28 DCB vbottom with some big power here on the west coast and I heard the owner had alot of issues with handling.....

Obviously the drive is going to break a few times.

Also, when you start messing with over 1000hp, gone are the days of just putting gas in and go.
