I'm having a little trouble deciding which route to go with my stereo remote installation. I have an 88 formula 311 and would like to add a wired remote to the helm but i'm not sure which is the best route to take for the wiring. The head unit is in the stock location and my wiring harness is about 20 feet long for the remote. If anybody has any advice please let me know! Thanks

My head unit went out and I really wanted to get one that would work with my existing remote....couldn't find one. Then couldn't find a remote big enough to cover the old location but small enough to fit there.
Gave up and bought one with a wireless remote since I don't use the stereo that much anyway.....the wireless remote works from the cockpit as long as your facing the cabin door. Not sure why and I didn't expect it, but it works!!

I currently have a wireless remote but it only works if you are aiming directly at the head unit, which is kinda hard to do on a 311.

I have had a few Sony's and always bought the additional wired remote (joystick style) they have others as well. They have a 15' wire plus extra you can buy (from anywhere). Just plugs into the back like a small jack. Most Sony head units will have this, even older ones.

Another option is, you can buy a sensor that works with your existing wireless remote. This you would install somewhere in the cockpit area or under-side of the radar arch, and this is where you point the remote.

If its a Clarion, they do make remote cables in several different lengths.

I ran the wires above the step into the cuddy on my 90 292. First, I ran them around and behind the dash (in between the bulkhead and the bathroom wall) - brought them across the step (tucking them up into the carpet just below the door threshold) - then back in between bulkhead and fridge wall, behind the fridge and up to the cd player. This went pretty easy and with the fridge out of the way took about 10 min to complete. Its completely hidden and worked with the cable length they gave me (15 or 18ft I think). I mounted my remote on the left side of the dash so that other people could mess with it and not be leaning over or around me. Next addition will be a 2nd remote on the transom.

thanks for the info sabercatt, that is what i was looking for. I have already removed my fridge so it should be fairly easy. I too am going to add a remote to the transom, i just haven't found a good spot yet. What did you use to cut the material your remote is mounted on. That stuff looks pretty tuff.

Its 2 layers of 1/4" plastic laminated together. Just used a hole saw with water running over it to cool so it will cut, otherwise it just melts and the saw gets stuck.

sabercatt, if you find a good place to mount your remote let me know. Does anybody know if you can run an xm controller, and two wired remotes off of a pioneer head unit all at the same time......thanks

Most companies have Y splitters that allow you to run multiple remotes. W/ my kenwood in my old baja i had 3 remotes connected. not sure how the xm controller connects on a pioneer, but on kenwood they have a dedicated data bus for cd changers, sat radio, etc that is seperate from the remote control bus.
