Default how do can i tell if salt water trashed my motors

bought a previous florida boat and i'm a little liery on the condition of the motors internally. the boats a 90 but it sat most its life, it only has 250 hrs on it. are there any good ways to check the blocks without tearing them down? any help would be great its going to be a big enough project without going through the motors

This is something that should have been thought of and checked out BEFORE the purchase. There is no reason to worry now and nothing you can do about it anyway. If saltwater sat in the engines without being flushed, there is probably some damage. If they were flushed, then they should be fine. Even 18 years of sitting in salt air will take its toll on everything, especially electrical.

First of all i would check if they turn over ,the atleast take the exhaust off and check for damage by looking into the ports.
Take the termostat off and look in there ,,if these things kind of look clean and not eaten up then u should be ok !

your first signs are usually some corrosion on any electrical connections/terminals, and bolt heads on the blocks. Down by the damper starts looking pretty bad too... if you see any of that, then it is probably further along. Pull the intake and see how nasty it looks.

I would have checked the motors before i bought it, but it was a screamin deal and the salt didnt seem to attack the boat itself and the motors look good externally, but id hate toget stranded cause i didnt checkit out.

Cast exhaust is only good for about 5 years unless the owner flushes regularly.

I guess if it was me, and I got a screamin' deal on a boat, I would prob. think there was a reason I got such an awesome deal on it. (I'm kinda paranoid that way) If it was mine, I would pop the motor's out, dismantle, inspect, and re-gasket. Replace what is necessary. You cannot put a price on peace-of-mind when you're on the water. You never know, by performing PM now, you may save thousands in mech. damage and failure later!
