I live in downtown Chicago and would love to have a boat docked locally to use. budget is tight so i'm limited to a 25' boat, and a friend has a nordic for sale. by no means do i plan on crossing the lake or being on the lake overnight, just something to wakeboard and have some fun relatively close to shore. i've been getting mixed reviews here, some say no way, 30 ft minimum, others say 25' is fine. any thoughts?

Lake Michigan can be even more treacherous that either ocean at times. Play it safe and you'll be fine.
Remember- The Edmund Fitzgerald wasnt big enough in a storm on Lake Superior so yeah it can get REAL bad on the great lakes.

Like was said, it depends on the wave conditions on any given day. The day I did the watertest on my AT on Lake Michigan, you could have been out there in a 16 footer and been fine. I've seen other pics, where I wouldn't go out in 40+ foot boat.
