I bought the msd blue box 2 years ago that uses the special rpm chips that plug in,it would only rev to 5400 and intermittently ran terrible, msd blamed my "grounds",re-wired it,still ran like crap. with my efi set-up I can un-plug it and run the stock ignition,it had no problem revving 6000. Sent it back, got a second one,it was WORSE. It would quit intermittently and breakup,I bought a msd tester and got a 3rd replacement box. the 3rd box I hooked directly up to the tester before ever installing it,it was DEAD ON ARRIVAL. If you wiggled the harness where it went into the msd case it would spark then quit after you quit pushing on the harness where it entered the box. Put the tester on the second box I hadn't sent back yet,it was fubar too. Called MSD for about the 5th time at this point and asked if there was a quality control problem with there marine boxes, they claimed I was the only one having this kind of problem. I bought a crane marine box to replace the msd, hooked the msd tester to it and turned it up to 9000 before ever installing it for ten minutes, sparked flawlessly. There is no way in hell the marine boxes are tested for 24 hours or whatever msd claims before being shipped if I can't get one to even work directly out of the shipping package.
I had used msd boxes on countless projects and customers vehicles before this without ever having issues and had a hard time believing claims that they are un-reliable,I now feel different,Smitty

we used to run MSD stuff on my top sportsman race car, but after having a whole season of weird issues that turned out to be a bad pick-up(that MSD just installed) and a 7al box failure we pulled all their stuff switched to crane..and noe we all know what happened to crane...so ?? but anyway my .02..MSD=may soon die !
