Default backfiring thru the carb

i've got a 572 that was backfiring thru the carb and getting worse. I pulled the motor and noticed the distributer was loose, if the dist turned and was not advanced enough would it cause my situation, it would start backfiring around 3000 rpm's. Or it could have been too far advanced
