I have heard that the MSD box's are very sensitive to changes in voltage. If you hook up battery chargers to your boats batteries, that can allow surges to affect the electronics inside the box. Some people have mentioned adding a filter that MSD makes and put it inline on your power lead. Its called a Noise filter part # MSD-8830 approx $36. This was some info I got while trying to trouble shoot a 6M-2L. Hope this helps.

Funny that this came up today. On one boat I have had a 6m for over 10 years with no problem. Just this weekend the 6m died on my other boat. I was having some eratic ignition problems and rebuilt the (MSD) distributer with all new parts, put it back in, still eratic then quit working all together. Swapped boxes, other box works perfect.
Cannot repair the 6m, so thinking about going to the 6ALN or Offroad.

as I've said many times before, in most cases MSD useless on a boat, will not make run any faster over aworking correcly good ignition system, and now they are outsourcing chinese componants, their reliability is horrible...if it was not great before...some boxes would last for years, some only days, so running one is like playing russian rulet..only matter of time....hard to beat a mallory unilite....
