Default IPOD straight to amp?

I saw that poly-planar offers a package where you can hook your ipod directly to their amp. It comes with a volume control that mounts to the dash and a plug for your ipod.

This seems like the perfect setup for me, as i have a small center console and would rather run directly off my ipod than mounting a head unit in it. However, i'd like to use a more powerful/higher quality amp and speakers than poly-planar offers.

Does anyone know if there are other amps out there i can do this with? What are the positives and negatives?

I know that a couple of brands of head units incorporate Ipod docks, like Fusion, but i'd rather avoid installing a reciever all together and just go ipod to amp to speakers.

Thanks! here's a link to the poly's.

You could use any amp. All you have to do is take the variable level output directly to the amp. Otherwise you you could simply use a line level volume control and the "line Output" from the Ipod to any amp.

I just looked at the Polyplanar device. You could use that with ANY amp.

Do you see any downside to doing it?

I can't believe there aren't more people marketing an ipod dock with built in volume control that goes straight to the amp.

There are lots of them and many run on 12 volt but you would need some way to hold the thing into the holder.

Where can i find them? Fusion has a cool waterproof docking station, but i think the plug is meant specifically for the Fusion head unit.

Maybe my best bet is trying to buy the volume control and ipod plug from poly-planar (separate from the kit), then buying my own amp, speakers, and docking station.
