Default MSD Ignition System

I have a stock 1998 502 MAG. If I add a MSD ignition box, rev-limiter and distributer do I need to have the ECM re-programmed? Correct me if I am wrong but the rev-limiter is controlled by the ECM, right.

I am wanting to add a cam and Vortec supercharger to it in the next to near future. I have been told to have the rev-limiter on the ECM raised higher then I need and then turn it down using the different chips on the MSD rev-limiter. This keeps me from hitting the rev-limiter on the ECM which cuts the fuel off and basically causes a internal melt down? any thoughts. I was told this is a key component with any supercharged motor? Any thoughts?

That is correct. You actually have the Rev Limiter raised 1000 RPM higher and then use a rev limiter chip lower to cut ignition. The new MSD Box has a built in rev limiter.

If you decide to do the MSD upgrade and or other upgrades, email me your parts list and I'll see ewhat I can do for you.

at the rpm these boats run at the msd will not make it run any faster/better the only thing it will do is change the rev limiter, which can be done by other means. the reliability of MSD now is terrible as they are now using outsorced chinese parts and their stuff is junk, pick-ups in the dist fail quickly, boxes whenever they feel like it. Nascar teams run 2 to make thru a single race and replace both of those before the next, I ran all their stuff on my top sportsman car and after several pickups failing, and 2 7al3 boxes I was done, now running all mallory. now just find somebody out there that put all the MSD stuff on their boat with nothing else and see what they honestly tell you..did it goe faster after spending $700 ??? so that being said I consider it a waste of $$$...Rob

All the above!! if you are looking for a hotter ignition just replace the coil for a hotter spark..all msd does, it drags out your timing a extra 7deg so it can burn all the fuel..unless you turning 6000+ rpms you dont need it..

I think his goal is more of changing how the rev limiter works to prevent a lean condition. The MSD will eliminate spark without eliminating fuel.
